I’m not really here to be chased by monsters. I like when a game gets psychological. Please use my mind against me… It’s not hard, believe me. My imagination is too active for my own good.

With the Backrooms movie coming out, I’ve found myself thinking about that feeling even more. Not just the aesthetic, but what makes something feel wrong in your bones. That quiet, unsettling apprehension where something looks familiar, but doesn’t feel quite right. That sense of offness.

Backrooms lore, liminal spaces, empty hallways that feel like they were meant to be bustling but now only echo your muffled voice back… that’s the kind of horror that attaches itself and lingers.

There are some great liminal games out there like Superliminal and POOLS that capture that essence. They let you explore, play with your perception, and disarm you with clever, unexpected moments instead of constant pressure. POOLS especially impressed me, and I’ve got a full review on that coming soon. But today, I want to talk about Exit 8.

Exit 8 has that same liminal energy, but it plays with it in a completely different way. It’s not really about wandering or getting lost. It’s more about noticing and paying attention. Catching the smallest differences in a space that looks exactly the same every time you walk through it. And I think that makes it worth diving into.

Now, I know there are some liminal purists out there and I get it. Not every game fits neatly into categories. But I think Exit 8 lives somewhere in a gray area. And I think that’s okay. Not everything has to fit perfectly into a box to capture a feeling. Sometimes it’s more about what a game does to you. The kind of tension it creates inside of you. The ways it makes you question by keeping you curious. It’s ok to live in the gray… Gandalf the Gray lived there too and he was friggen awesome. So let’s get into it.

I discovered The Exit 8 while browsing the PlayStation Plus catalog. It was one of those games where I wasn’t going to say no to a free game. I probably wouldn’t have searched for it, but being in the catalog made it an easy choice. I went in not really knowing what to expect but was open to the experience. What I ended up with was an hour long paranoia simulator that started out as a fun puzzle but leaned hard into the mind games.

The premise is simple. You are trapped in a looping underground passage. Your goal is to find Exit 8. That’s it. There is very little explanation and almost no traditional storytelling. Instead, the game relies on environmental observation. As you walk through the corridor, your task is to carefully examine your surroundings. If you notice an “anomaly” (something I understood as “one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn’t belong”), you turn around. If everything looks normal, you continue forward. Your progress is tracked as you move deeper into the corridor, subtly letting you know how close you are to escaping.

At first the space feels almost mundane. Fluorescent lights hum overhead. Posters line the walls. Doors sit quietly along the hallway. The environment is clean, polished, and strangely sterile. For a moment it feels less like a horror game and more like a visual observation puzzle. Then the doubt starts creeping in.

Some anomalies are obvious and impossible to ignore. Those were the moments that genuinely shocked me and even triggered a few jump scares. Others are incredibly subtle. A small change in a poster. Something slightly off about the lighting. A tiny detail that makes you pause and ask yourself whether it was always that way. Uncertainty becomes a mechanic.

There were multiple times I turned around even when I couldn’t see an actual anomaly. Usually I noticed something for the first time and immediately second guessed myself. The game doesn’t just test your memory. It tests your confidence.

One particular type of anomaly involving the doors along the side of the hallway genuinely made my stomach drop. You get so used to those doors being closed and completely still that any change to them feels deeply wrong. I won’t spoil exactly what happens, but the moment something shifted and completely freaked me out. The familiarity of the hallway is what makes those moments so effective.

Another moment that stood out involved the lone man who walks through the corridor. At one point I stopped directly in front of him and he stopped as well. That was already unsettling. But then as I turned around to leave, I suddenly heard footsteps behind me getting closer. I started sprinting ahead and the the footsteps started sprinting too. For a few seconds it felt like he was chasing me down the hallway before he disappeared. After that, I started playing very differently.

That moment alone pushed the experience from a simple observation puzzle into psychological horror. The hallway stopped feeling passive and started feeling unpredictable.

As I played more, I developed a scanning routine. I would check the ceiling panel on the left first. Then the non smoking sign with the red and green cigarette colors on the right. After that I would inspect the posters. Whenever the man walked past I would stop to look at him and glance up at the exit sign and the concourse directions across the hall. Then I would move on to the vents and finally the doors. Each run through the hallway became almost ritualistic.

But honestly the sound design deserves so much credit. While most anomalies are visual, sometimes an anomaly can happen with sound instead. The environment is normally so quiet and consistent, any strange audio cue immediately stands out. Those moments were incredibly effective at breaking my focus and putting me on edge.

It took me about an hour to finally reach the “actual” exit (don’t ask). Despite the short length, I genuinely enjoyed the experience. Until you become familiar with where the anomalies appear, the replayability is surprisingly strong. The game constantly pushes you to doubt yourself, which keeps each run tense.

That said, surprise is one of the game’s biggest strengths. Once you fully memorize the anomalies, some of that tension naturally fades. For that reason, I would love to see additional anomalies added through an update or DLC. The concept is strong enough that fresh variations could easily bring the paranoia right back.

All in all, It’s easy to pick up, easy to understand, and doesn’t require a huge time commitment. The mechanics are simple, the controls are straightforward, and you can jump in and out whenever you want.

The Exit 8 proves that you don’t need complicated systems or a massive world to create tension. Sometimes all it takes is a single hallway, a handful of subtle changes, and the creeping feeling of “was that there before?”…

Bio Inc Redemption: A Doctor’s Journey Through Guesswork and Gut Feelings

First Impressions

RockAGoth

<picture></picture>

First Impressions

I really wanted to hate this game. I really did. Bio Inc. Redemption throws you in with next to no explanation. The tutorial is vague and frustrating. There’s no walkthrough, no beginner guides, just expectations. At first, I was annoyed. But then something unexpected happened.

The more I guessed, yes, guessed, and used gut instincts to try to save my virtual patient’s life, the more involved I got. That lack of hand-holding started to feel less like a flaw and more intentional. Just like in real life, where doctors rely on patterns, symptoms, and experience to diagnose, I found myself learning the same way. I still don’t know what everything does on the screen. But somehow, I’m saving lives. Kind of.

Pandemic, But Inside the Body

If you’ve played the tabletop game Pandemic, this might feel strangely familiar. Instead of countries getting overrun by viral outbreaks, you’re dealing with systems in a patient’s body. Nervous, respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, muscular, and more. The more they fail, the more urgent everything becomes. You’re racing against the clock and entropy.

Here are a few parallels I’ve noticed:

Scenario-based: Like Pandemic, every case plays out differently. What kills your patient in one run may not in the next.

Solo, but not alone: Technically, Bionic Redemption is single-player. But it’s surprisingly fun to have a friend or partner play “consulting doctor” and offer their opinion. Kinda like House M.D., but with less shaming.

No hand-holding: In both games, you learn by failing. By recognizing patterns. By making educated guesses. There’s beauty in the slow realization that you’re improving without even noticing.

Mechanics & Replayability

You choose whether to play as the “Good Doctor” or the “Bad Doctor”. Male or female patient, mostly cosmetic, you’re given different reproductive systems and different diseases associated with them. And that’s about it for roles.

What makes the gameplay addictive is how it simulates the actual diagnostic process. The biomap displays all body systems. Guess correctly? That section lights up red. Guess wrong? Wasted time and your patient isn’t getting any better.

Your guesses and assumptions improve every time just by trying. By noticing patterns of what tends to pop up more often than not. You learn by experience. The game doesn’t teach you explicitly, but you start recognizing early signs of major issues. And somehow, my gameplay time was 18 hours in 2 days.

Bugs & Bionic Bumps

I’ve run into a couple bugs:

Countdown bug: The health hits 0%, all systems fail… but the game keeps going like nothing happened. It’s supposed to stop to let you start a new game.

Menu bug: Occasionally, I get stuck in a screen and can’t return to the biomap, forcing a full restart.

These bugs don’t ruin the game, but they’re worth noting, especially if you’re deep into a diagnosis and everything locks up.

Replay Value

What makes this game a winner for me is how easy it is to pick up and put down. You can play one round on your lunch break, or accidentally spend 6 hours trying to keep your patient from slipping away. It’s a great in-between game. A palette cleanser. Something that scratches that itch without needing a huge time commitment.

Final Thoughts

I came to Bionic Redemption to try it. I stayed because I became emotionally attached to saving lives and weirdly proud of my growing instincts. It’s not perfect, but it’s compelling and strangely personal.

Would I still like an easier onboarding process? Yes. Do I think this game could be amazing with a few extra features? Also yes. Will I stop playing anytime soon? No. And I still don’t know why this patient keeps dying so much…

This is one of those games I know I’ll come back to time and time again. It doesn’t matter if I finish a mission or not, it’s genuinely fun to just try. Whether I’m using it as a break between heavier games or just sneaking in a quick round, Bionic Redemption hits that sweet spot of challenge and chill. It’s a keeper.

State of Play: Demo Reviews

The recent PlayStation State of Play had a lot going on. Big announcements. Cinematic trailers. Games dropping back to back to back. But you know what made me pause… Demos.

There is something about hearing the word “demo” that instantly gets my attention. Trailers are alright but really I need to see that gameplay footage. Teasers are ok... But a demo, well now you’re speaking my language. Some people like a good coffee. Some people love a good pair of shoes. I love a good demo. It lets me test the mechanics, take a sneak peek at the story, and decide if I am actually invested or only impressed at distance.

The moment I saw Pragmata and Darwin’s Paradox both had demos available, I whipped out my PS App and remote downloaded them so quick XD.

Here are my thoughts after spending time with both.
<div This didn’t seem like my kind of game. I was expecting to get bored of it quickly. Don’t get me wrong I love sci-fi but am a bit picky when it comes to it. So I went in cautious. The graphics were beautiful right off the bat but then the mechanics really stood out.

The combat system genuinely surprised me. It’s rare that mechanics feel new and even rarer that they start feeling intuitive quickly.

During fights, you are not just shooting or dodging. You are also getting some assistance from your little companion to hack enemies in real time. It adds a layer of urgency and strategy without being too overwhelming. You do not technically have to hack every time, but choosing not to makes combat more difficult.

It reminds me of how interactive combat once changed the way I saw turn based systems in The Legend of Dragoon. That feeling of pressing a button at the right moment and suddenly realizing combat can be more immersive than you thought. Pragmata gave me that same nostalgic feeling.

The boss fight in the demo looked impossible. But once I started noticing patterns and using the tools, it clicked.

My only friction point was navigation. Some areas looked accessible but were not. I got turned around a couple times trying to figure out where to go next. They’re often cozy, colorful, filled with characters, and at their best they feel like you’re part of something warm and alive. Cooking, at first glance, seems to be reaching for that same vibe. The visuals are charming. The atmosphere is peaceful. And for just $2 on sale, I figured, why not?

But this isn’t your usual “rush to serve everyone” game. There’s no timer, no line of customers, no bellowing head chef. “Cooking” is where the rice is warm, the petals fall gently, and the loneliness lingers. You’re alone in a beautiful Japanese restaurant, nestled in a quiet neighborhood where Sakura trees line the streets and cherry blossom petals drift past your windows. It’s soft. It’s still. And, strangely… it’s empty.

Living in the Moment, Pour by Pour

Mechanically, Cooking does something kind of lovely, it slows you down. You can’t just dump ingredients or mash buttons. Pouring rice has to be done with care, just to the right level. You have to wash the grains, mix sauces, slice meat and veggies, and read to each step. The sound design is soft and tactile: pouring water, tapping the knife on the cutting board, the hum of kitchen ASMR.

This isn’t a cooking dash game, it’s a cook-and-reflect game. You’re encouraged to be present. To do it right. And in that moment, when you’re gently stirring a sauce or shaping onigiri, the game almost achieves something quietly profound.

The Camera Wobbles While You Work

Unfortunately, the mechanics don’t always live up to the game’s serene ambitions. The camera, in particular, feels too loose, swinging just a little too wildly as you move. When you’re trying to grab an ingredient, click a button, or line something up, the lack of precision becomes frustrating. I found myself wishing for a slower camera movement, or even a snap-to system to help pinpoint the many small interactions.

Instead of relaxing into the moment, I sometimes fought the controls giving the game a bit of a floaty, janky feel that chipped away at its otherwise peaceful presentation. The desire for mindfulness is there, but the polish needed to fully support it is just a little out of reach.

A Restaurant with No Guests

But that beauty quickly slips into something else: loneliness.

There are spots at the window where customers could sit. But no one ever comes. No footsteps. No conversations. No warmth from shared meals. Just infinite orders that appear from nowhere and a peaceful neighborhood outside that never interacts with you.

It starts to feel like a liminal space, a restaurant between realities. You exist in a bubble where food is made but never truly served. Food, in most cultures, is about sharing, community, memory. But here, it’s only process. A beautiful process, yes but with no one to share it with, it starts to feel hollow.

Decor Without Guests, Automation Without Joy

There is a progression system kind of. You can earn money to buy new décor for your restaurant, and gameplay upgrades to streamline your kitchen flow. But the décor? It’s purely aesthetic. There are no customers to compliment it. No bump in income. No connection between ambiance and business.

Then there are the upgrades. You can automate things like washing rice or cutting ingredients. It helps with multitasking, sure, but it also chips away at the very soul of the game. These are the mindful actions that made Cooking feel tactile and grounded. The automation turns the experience from meditative into mildly passive. The joy fades when you’re no longer part of the ritual.

The Emoji Mystery and the Echo of Connection

Every once in a while, emojis pop up smiley faces, hearts, reactions. But… from who? Why? Am I posting food online? Are these people in the neighborhood? Ghosts? It’s never explained. It’s the hint of a social mechanic that never fully blooms.

It made me wonder: what if Cooking had leaned into that idea? Maybe you’re running a food blog. Maybe you’re cooking to stay connected to your roots. Maybe your only customers are digital ones in an online world. Anything to anchor these reactions to meaning.

The potential is there, it’s just never realized.

Infinite Mode, Finite Motivation

The game’s infinite mode is a good way to explore and learn recipes, and I appreciated not being rushed. But without a story, or even a hint of character motivation, it all starts to blur. The only real incentive to keep going is unlocking new recipes… which trickle in slowly and without much fanfare.

And with such gorgeous cultural dishes, it’s a missed opportunity not to tie them into something deeper. Why these meals? What do they mean to the character? Or the region? Food tells stories and here, it feels like those stories were left on the prep table.

Final Thoughts

Cooking is peaceful. It’s visually lovely. The sound design is deeply satisfying. This is the second cultural cozy cooking sim I’ve played, my first being Kitchen Sync Aloha. And while both games offer a plate full of heart and heritage, they approach the genre like two chefs with different styles in the same warm kitchen.

Where Kitchen Sync Aloha taps into that fast-paced, Dash-style gameplay, Venba feels like a slow-cooked story stew, rich, layered, and lovingly stirred. It wraps a cozy cooking sim inside an interactive narrative that follows an Indian couple as they immigrate to Canada, start a family, and navigate life’s triumphs and challenges, one meal at a time.

Venba can run up to just about two hours long, but it’s not rushed. The pacing feels like a good simmer, each scene perfectly seasoned, every emotional sear allowed to breathe. It tells its story with quiet power, never over-explaining but always evoking.

And while I don’t want to spoil the deeper meaning, let’s just say there’s something in here, something tender and important, that I think is best discovered in your own time. Like a family secret hidden in a passed down recipe.

Unlike most cooking games, this isn’t about speed or perfection. Venba’s cookbook is incomplete. You’re solving how to make each dish using intuition, observation, and just a little trial and error.

Sometimes you’ll add the right ingredient in the wrong order. Sometimes something will just smell off, and Venba will tell you so. But there’s no harsh penalty, only the gentle push to try again. It captures that very real feeling of trying to recreate a beloved dish from memory, with love and guesswork.

Where Kitchen Sync Aloha was about timing and multitasking, Venba is almost meditative. The challenge comes not from pressure, but from problem-solving. You’re not racing the clock; you’re interpreting history. Each cooking section is like flipping through the family scrapbook and seeing a page smudged by time and you, gently, are trying to restore.

Visually, Venba uses a cartoon-like style that’s expressive and sweet. But I’ll be honest, I wish the food looked a little more realistic. Indian cuisine is a visual feast, and while the style choice is consistent, I found myself craving more texture and detail, especially in the dishes. Kitchen Sync Aloha nailed that aspect with more stylized realism.

The sound design, though? Absolute chef’s kiss. Indian music plays as you cook, upbeat, warm, and full of heart. It makes the kitchen feel alive, and it anchors the whole experience with joy.

What really stood out to me was that Venba didn’t feel nostalgic, it felt like a cultural invitation. I wasn’t reminiscing; I was learning. Every dish told a story. Every recipe was a chance to walk in someone else’s shoes. It’s a rare and beautiful thing to experience a game that centers a specific culture without making it feel like a lesson, it just is, and that’s powerful.

I also love that it showed how food is an act of love, tradition, and quiet strength. The kind of strength immigrant families pass on not just through words, but through flavor.

Here are a few of the delicious dishes that feature in the game:

    • Idli – Soft steamed rice cakes

    • Puttu – Cylindrical rice and coconut delicacy

    • Chicken Rasam – A spicy, tangy comfort soup

    • Layered Biryani – The showstopper of the kitchen

    • Dosai, Pongal, Vadai – South Indian staples

Bonus: Venba taught me how to make dosa, and now? I am confidently a dosa queen. So yes this game literally taught me a new skill, and I’m out here flipping like a pro.

As the credits rolled, I wasn’t thinking about high scores or unlocked achievements, I was thinking about my own mother’s recipes and my grandmother’s. About the ones never written down. About the smells that meant home. Venba doesn’t just ask you to cook, it asks you to remember. And it reminds you that memory, like food, can be passed down… if we’re willing to stir the pot.

So in the spirit of the game and because no post about Venba feels complete without it, here’s a simplified version of Venba’s dosa, reimagined for beginner chefs with big hearts and small.

Dosa for Dreamers (A Cozy-Inspired Recipe)

Inspired by the love and layering of Venba’s kitchen.

Ingredients

    • 1 cup parboiled rice

    • 1/3 cup urad dal (split black gram)

    • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds

    • Salt to taste

    • Oil or ghee for cooking

Optional Cozy Add-ons

    • A sprinkle of chopped cilantro

    • Masala potato filling (Venba would be proud)

    • A playlist of Tamil lullabies in the background

Instructions

    1. Soak rice, urad dal, and fenugreek seeds in water (in separate bowls) for 4–6 hours or overnight.

    2. Drain and grind each to a smooth batter, combining into one large bowl. Add water until the batter is pourable but thick.

    3. Cover and let ferment in a warm place for 8–12 hours (like a cozy secret waiting to rise).

    4. Once fermented, stir in salt. Heat a nonstick pan, pour a ladle of batter, and spread it into a thin circle.

    5. Drizzle oil or ghee around the edges. Cook until golden brown, flip if desired, and serve hot.

Serve with chutney, sambhar, or just a dollop of homesick joy.

Thanks for playing, feeling, and cooking with me. Venba isn’t a game you beat, it’s a story you carry. And maybe, if we’re lucky, a recipe or two we pass along.

Potion Party: A Solo Experience in a Multiplayer Cauldron

As someone who primarily plays single-player games, I picked up Potion Party curious to see how it holds up without the “party” part.

RockAGoth

As someone who primarily plays single-player games, I picked up Potion Party curious to see how it holds up without the “party” part. The pixel art is intentionally retro, but borders on too rudimentary. We’ve come so far with what pixels can express, you see gorgeous pixel art everywhere now, so it’s a bit disappointing that Potion Party doesn’t take that extra step. It has the potential to be vibrant and whimsical, but ends up feeling like it’s holding back. It’s colorful, sure, but it doesn’t lean into its magical theme as much as it could.

Gameplay-wise, the loop is a classic Dash style: pick a plant that matches a customer’s potion order, water it to grow, grind it, pour it into the beaker, and serve. It’s satisfying once you figure out the rhythm. But there’s no real tutorial so you’re left to guess what to do and lose a few rounds figuring things out. There are some pop-up hints, but nothing that really prepares you. Learning by doing was kind of fun at the first, but it did cost me a couple of turns and a few cranky customers.

As I kept playing, the game started throwing in more mechanics. Ghosts that flip your controls. Jelly blobs that slow you down. New items and actions that appear with no explanation. There’s no story to explain these things or guide you through them. Why are there ghosts haunting your shop? Where did the jelly blobs come from? The game introduces new challenges, but without any narrative reason, it just feels random.

That’s where I think Potion Party really missed its golden opportunity. It could’ve leaned harder into the cozy, magical shop aesthetic. Imagine if there were a map, and you unlocked abandoned potion shops across different regions, each with a unique backstory and new ingredients or ghosts tied to that place. The ghost mechanic could’ve come with lore, like spirits of past alchemists or cursed items. Even the jelly blobs could’ve had some personality or purpose.

There are playable characters with unique powers and designs, but no context for who they are or why they’re brewing potions. They look like they could have fun, quirky backstories so why don’t we get to learn them?

That lack of reward or discovery also makes the solo mode feel flat after a while. There’s nothing surprising or particularly motivating to keep going. I enjoyed figuring out how the gameplay worked at first there’s definitely fun in that early discovery but beyond that, the stages start to feel repetitive. It’s do the stage, then do the next stage. No momentum, no hook. If there had been a narrative, even a light one, it could’ve made a world of difference.

To its credit, Potion Party is an easy game to pick up and put down. You don’t need to invest tons of time. It’s great in between other games or for a quick challenge. It’s also easy to come back to, even after taking breaks, because the mechanics are simple and intuitive once you’ve got the hang of them.

But as a solo player, I found myself checking out. I might pick it up again for a quick round or to play with a friend, but I don’t see myself completing it alone. I get the sense that with two to four players, it could actually be a blast, the kind of chaotic fun you find in Overcooked, where communication and teamwork (and probably yelling) are the main draw.

Final verdict: As a solo game, it’s fine. Not broken, but not compelling either. If you’ve got friends around, it might turn into a favorite party title. If you’re going solo, don’t expect depth, story, or any real sense of discovery. It’s functional fun but it could’ve been something magical.

TLDR:

Potion Party is a charming pixel art game that struggles to capture the essence of a solo experience. While it’s fun for quick breaks and easy to pick up, the lack of a tutorial, narrative, and deeper character development makes it feel flat as a single-player game. The game shines more as a party game, where you can enjoy the chaos with friends, but solo players may find it lacking in long-term engagement. It’s fun, but it could have used more narrative depth and rewarding progression.

Romancing the GOAT, my time in Wytchwood

Wytchwood is a narrative journey with twists, turns, mystery, and depth not unlike a knarled ancient forest.

RockAGoth

<picture></picture>

Welcome to Wytchwood

Wytchwood is a narrative journey with twists, turns, mystery, and depth not unlike a knarled ancient forest. Enemies can be avoided if you prefer a peaceful session, and I love that the game allows you to choose how you want to play, whether you’re advancing the story or simply gathering materials at your own pace.

Crafting plays a major role, and while I enjoy being prepared, the system does have its limitations. You can only craft one item at a time, which becomes tedious if you need more than a few of something. There’s a handful of items that are consistently used throughout and mass production would have saved some time. The Grimoire, your spell book, is beautifully illustrated but could benefit from a few improvements. It would be helpful to see which ingredients are used in multiple recipes or to filter by region. A search function and some animated flair would really elevate it.

The journal, however, is quite effective. It breaks quests into manageable steps so you’re rarely lost, although sometimes the guidance feels a little too direct. I’d love a difficulty setting that adjusts the level of help, offering options from no hints to full task lists. That way, players could tailor the experience to match their preferred level of challenge every time they play.

The game’s pacing also surprised me. After completing what I thought was the conclusion I was reminded there was still more to go. It’s a long journey, and the deeper you go, the more compelling it becomes. I thought the length felt just right. Not too short but just long enough.

That said, Wytchwood isn’t without technical issues. The game immediately sets a mysterious tone, drawing players into a world that feels both nostalgic and unsettling.

Visually, Beacon Pines evokes the warmth of classic Golden Books—anyone remember those?—with its storybook-style illustrations. The artwork gives off a childlike innocence, but the underlying themes are far more sinister. This isn’t a game for kids, but it’s perfect for your inner child, especially if you enjoy eerie, story-driven experiences.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the gameplay is its branching narrative. Choices aren’t just about altering a single playthrough—you collect charms that unlock new decisions, allowing you to revisit and reshape key moments in the story. This mechanic simplifies the concept of alternate timelines in a way that feels fresh and accessible. While we’ve seen similar ideas in games like Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology, Beacon Pines stands out by letting players return and explore different outcomes organically.

The game places a strong emphasis on exploration, narrative, and interaction. One of its standout features is the narrator, who doesn’t just break the fourth wall but actively makes you feel like you’re uncovering the story together. This added a personal touch that made the experience even more immersive.

That said, the game does have its downsides. It’s quite short, and despite the premise of multiple choices, the branching paths are limited—ultimately, you’re funneled into three main storylines. The experience feels very curated, with less freedom than you might expect from a choice-driven game.

From Forlorn to Found: Guided by Emberlight in The Last Campfire

The Last Campfire is a beautifully crafted game that blends a cute, quirky aesthetic with a surprisingly somber theme.

RockAGoth

<picture></picture>

The Last Campfire

The Last Campfire is a beautifully crafted game that blends a cute, quirky aesthetic with a surprisingly somber theme. Set in a mysterious crossroads, you play as an Ember—a small, lost being who takes it upon themselves to help others who have given up hope. The game’s overarching fire and light symbolism is woven thoughtfully throughout the experience, reinforcing its themes of guidance, renewal, and perseverance.

One of the standout aspects of The Last Campfire is its narration. The soft, soothing voice carries a gentle accent that makes the storytelling feel both intimate and immersive. The narration unfolds at a measured pace, revealing pieces of the world’s mystery in a way that keeps you engaged.

At its core, this is a puzzle adventure game filled with creative and imaginative challenges that require you to shift your perspective and think outside the box. There are no enemies to fight, no threats to evade—only landscapes to navigate, puzzles to solve, and lost embers to rescue. Each forlorn Ember represents a soul that has lost its way, and by reigniting their hope, you bring light back to the world, ultimately illuminating the last campfire.

The art style is cozy and inviting, perfectly complemented by a soothing soundtrack that enhances the game’s meditative atmosphere. While the journey is relatively short, the experience is rich and rewarding, offering a heartfelt exploration of loss, hope, and purpose.

If you enjoy puzzle-solving, exploration, and a deeply moving story, The Last Campfire is well worth your time.

Now & Next: The Velvet Backlog

Here’s the latest installment of Now & Next, a sneak peek at what I’m currently playing before the full review drops.

RockAGoth

Here’s the latest installment of Now & Next, a sneak peek at what I’m currently playing before the full review drops. didn’t know you were holding. It’s not about winning. It’s not even really about surviving. It’s about being—sitting with the raw, unrelenting ache of having loved deeply and lost profoundly.

This is not a story that holds your hand. It doesn’t guide you to catharsis. Instead, it immerses you in the slow, stifling fog of grief, refusing to offer easy answers—or any at all. The protagonist, a solitary figure who once knew joy, now trudges through wilderness and memory alike. He sees her in everything: in the rustle of leaves, in the quiet routines of his day, in the way the light hits a certain space in the cabin. The world around him is vast, but it never stops feeling empty.

Thanks for reading Crimson Console! In every action. Every breath. His grief is not just pain—it’s ritual. He stays, because leaving would mean forgetting. He hurts, because healing might mean letting go. It’s brutal. It’s honest.

Even the game’s rough mechanical edges add to this emotional unraveling. And in that, the game captures something that polished titles can’t: the messiness of mourning. The stumbling. The repetition. The days bleeding into one another like overcast skies that never quite clear.

You don’t play this game—you witness it. And you wish you could reach through the screen, offer him a kind word, or a shoulder. But you can’t. All you can do is watch as he builds his own prison out of grief, locking himself inside because the pain is the only connection he has left to the one he lost.

There’s no closure here. No triumphant moment of healing. Just the endless echo of someone who was once whole and is now irreparably hollow. The game’s message isn’t inspirational—it’s real. Grief exists. It sucks. And it doesn't always end. Sometimes, we cling to it because it's all we have left of the person we loved.

If Pine were anything else, it would be a waterspout—a sudden burst of anguish erupting from the deep. A soul screaming through nature’s silence. And within that storm is a man who isn’t trying to move on. He’s trying to remember. Even if it destroys him.

Pine: A Story of Loss doesn’t want to be consumed quickly. It wants you to sit with it. To feel the silence between moments. To understand, even briefly, what it means to be alone, not just physically, but existentially.

If you’re looking for a game that lingers like the scent of someone long gone on a piece of clothing you refuse to wash this is it. This will make you feel and remind you that you are alive and human. And after the credits roll, you may find yourself staring at the wall, wondering…

How do you deal with loss?

Do you try to move on, or do you sit with the memory even if it breaks you?

Thanks for reading Crimson Console! What starts as a simple story quickly evolves into something much deeper and more unexpected. We meet Mae, a college dropout returning home to pick up where she left off—only to realize that life has moved on without her. Her apprehension is deeply relatable, especially as she struggles with the expectations of the people she left behind.

Mae’s journey feels incredibly personal. I empathized with her sense of displacement, the way she grapples with change, and the uncertainty of finding her place in a world that no longer feels familiar.

Beyond its emotional depth, the game is filled with fun, engaging mini-games. Demon Tower is a fantastic throwback to ‘90s dungeon crawlers, and Mae’s bass-playing segments offer a rhythm game that’s both funky and challenging. These elements add variety and charm to the experience, making the world feel even more alive.

As the story unfolds, it takes turns you’d never expect, gradually escalating into something surreal and unsettling. By the end, you’re left wondering—what would have happened if Mae had never come home?

Night in the Woods is a beautifully written, emotionally resonant experience that blends humor, nostalgia, and existential dread in a way few games manage. If you haven’t played it yet, it’s definitely worth the journey.

OxenFree2: Returning to what was lost…

I loved Oxenfree so much that getting Oxenfree II was a no-brainer—and I’m happy to say it delivered.

RockAGoth

<picture></picture>

I loved Oxenfree so much that getting Oxenfree II was a no-brainer—and I’m happy to say it delivered. The game expands on everything that made the first one great, with improved mechanics, a larger map, and the addition of a two-way radio that adds new layers to exploration and storytelling. It’s a bit longer than the original, though not by much. My only real complaint was that navigating exits on each screen could be a bit tricky.

One of the things I appreciated most was how seamlessly the story tied into the events of the first game. There are some truly shocking revelations that were subtly hinted at in Oxenfree, making this sequel feel like a natural continuation rather than just another eerie adventure.

Overall, I really enjoyed Oxenfree II and would absolutely recommend it. It’s hard to say which game I liked more—the first felt like a one-of-a-kind experience, but the second had a compelling narrative with refined mechanics and added depth. And just like its predecessor, the artwork remains distinctive and beautifully haunting, perfectly capturing the eerie, atmospheric charm that makes the series so special.

Boiling Dread Beneath the Surface: My Cozy Descent into Cooking Companions

Since this just came out a couldn’t stop playing it soI thought I would get this review out there!

When I picked up Cooking Companions, I thought I was in for something chill maybe quirky, maybe even wholesome. You know, a comfort game. Cozy cooking sim perhaps. What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out… everything.

A Cozy Lie, Served Hot

Even the title screen tricks you—bright colors, cheerful music, and adorable veggie mascots. And for a while, I was lulled into that safety.

Then the silence started.

Not just a lack of music, intentional silence. The kind that makes you sit up a little straighter. The kind that makes your skin crawl. Paired with sudden, discordant bursts of sound, the game builds dread the way a kettle builds pressure. You feel it coming, even if you don’t know what it is. If you’ve ever listened to Lorn or watched their music videos it gives you those vibes but in video game form.

Bloody Mary in the Mirror

If I had to compare Cooking Companions to anything, it wouldn’t be another video game, it would be a childhood dare.

You remember Bloody Mary? Standing in front of a mirror, chanting her name, waiting for something to happen. And nothing does. In this game nothing happens… Until it does.

That’s the kind of dread this game serves. It’s not about jump scares (though yes, there are a few). It’s about the sense that something is behind you, watching. Creeping. Unseen. It gives you goosebumps and leaves you glancing over your shoulder long after you’ve turned off the game.

Nightmares Are Served

The nightmare sequences in Cooking Companions?

Unsettling doesn’t begin to cover it.

They’re quiet. Still. But thick with tension. You know something is off, and yet you can’t stop watching. Sometimes you’re hit with jump scares, but only when you’ve started to feel safe again. It’s psychological warfare, and you’re the only victim locked in the basement and held hostage.

There were times I had to put the game down. Breathe. Question my life choices. Then go back, because I needed to know what happens. But you know what they say about curiosity…

Suspicious Veggies & Whispered Tension

Let’s talk about the Chompettes. The cutesy, talking vegetables you meet on the title screen that seem lighthearted and childlike at first… until you start noticing things. They don’t quite fit. And the more you interact with them, the less you trust them.

I had moments where a single conversation with one of them was enough to send a chill down my spine. The atmosphere the game builds around these interactions is uncanny, it turns something charming into something quietly menacing.

Twists Without Warning

Without revealing anything, I’ll just say that Cooking Companions does an incredible job of weaving tension, psychological horror, and surprise together.

It doesn’t rely on blood and gore. It doesn’t need to scream at you. It whispers. And it executes giving off lurker energy really well.

Should You Play It?

If you enjoy:

    • Narrative-driven experiences

    • Psychological horror that doesn’t rely on shock value

    • Rich atmosphere and immersive sound design

    • The slow burn of dread…

Then yes. You should absolutely play Cooking Companions.

It’s one of those games that stays with you. One of those “cozy” titles that tricks you into relaxing before yanking the rug out from under you.

Final Thoughts

I went in expecting a feel-good cooking story.

I came out with nerves shot, a racing pulse, and the unshakable suspicion that a potato might be plotting something.

This game?

It simmers.

It seethes.

And by the time you realize the dread’s been boiling beneath the surface all along…

You’re already in too deep.

Now & Next : The Velvet Backlog

Welcome to Now & Next: The Velvet Backlog, your sneak peek into what I’m currently playing and what’s upcoming.

RockAGoth

Welcome to Now & Next: The Velvet Backlog, your sneak peek into what I’m currently playing and what’s upcoming. 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture>

When I first picked up Strange Horticulture, it was because it was on sale, honestly. I’m not exactly a plant mom; in fact, I’m more of a plant funeral director. But from the moment I stepped into the game’s shadowy, mysterious world, I was hooked. Imagine Clue meets Little Shop of Horrors, and gothic dinner theater wrapped in a cozy blanket of occult vibes, sprinkled with puzzles, and featuring a very pettable black cat. Yes, you can (and absolutely should) pet the cat.

This isn’t your typical farming sim, while there is a watering can involved, you won’t be planting rows of cabbage or wooing villagers. Strange Horticulture is puzzle-heavy, riddle-filled, and inventory-based. You collect clues, decipher maps, mix strange elixirs, and identify a wide array of exotic plants, all from behind the counter of your eerie little apothecary-slash-botanical shop. The game rarely moves outside that space, so when it does—such as during one of the puzzle “trials” you’re subjected to after three wrong answers —it’s a welcome and well-executed shift in scenery and gameplay.

The first puzzle trial caught me off guard. I was like, “Oh, okay, we’re doing this now?” But honestly, I looked forward to them. They broke up the gameplay and added some much-needed spice to the shop routine.

Some of the time I did have to guess, but guessing wrong has consequences. Misidentify a plant or give the wrong one to a customer, and you’ll be punished with a sudden puzzle trial that tests your problem-solving under pressure. Let’s just say: this cozy game has teeth.

And cozy it is, but with sharp little thorns. The structure of the game is chef’s kiss for organization nerds. There’s a drawer for your notes, a beautiful (and strange) Book of Strange Plants, maps, and more, all designed in a way that feels natural and intuitive. As a graphic designer, I have to give them major kudos: they packed a lot of systems into a compact space without making it feel overwhelming. You’re also given tools to decrypt ciphers, reveal hidden messages, and uncover secrets, all while thumbing through your beloved botany book.

Narratively, it’s exactly my kind of strange. You’re running a plant shop—but not just any shop. This one specializes in rare, exotic, and sometimes unsettling flora. I love stories where you’ve arrived in a new town, started over, or built something from scratch, and this scratched that itch hard. As the days pass and customers come in with increasingly weird and urgent requests, it becomes clear something bigger is happening. There are conspiracies, mysterious groups, and choices—real ones—that shape your story.

One of the first standout moments was when a customer asked for a specific plant…but I knew I could give them something else that might be better—or at least morally satisfying. That ability to influence the narrative? That made me feel like a part of the world, not just a player in it.

And let me just rave about the art and sound for a second. The hand-drawn map, the moody, vintage color palette, the plants (especially the fungi and bioluminescent ones—I love things that glow)—everything was so intentional and immersive. And the sound design? Amazing. The sharp trill of the bell, the distant crack of thunder, the soft purring of your cat—it all creates a feeling that’s equal parts cozy and unsettling. No detail was overlooked.

Oh—and I can’t forget the character journal. Just like everything else in this game, it’s well-organized, thoughtfully designed, and full of personality. It helps keep track of who’s who in a world where trust is definitely not guaranteed.

So, who is this game for? If you’re looking for a whimsical, gothic, atmospheric experience where you can flex your puzzle-solving muscles without dodging bullets or quick-time events, this is for you. It’s the kind of game you savor, not chug. Like sipping a fine Pappy Van Winkle instead of shotgunning a PBR. It’s a slower burn, but worth every second if you let yourself settle into it.

Strange Horticulture gave me a nostalgia hit I didn’t expect. I grabbed it because it was on sale. After playing? I would’ve paid more.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree is an indie narrative-driven game that I managed to complete in a It’s not particularly long, but it delivers an unforgettable experience in that short time.

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller that follows a group of friends who unintentionally open a ghostly rift on an abandoned military island. The gameplay is simple—you make choices, navigate obstacles, and tune a radio to interact with the mysterious forces at play.
